Clark Creek ES STEM Academy Wins 'Garden of the Season' Recognition from the State
Clark Creek Elementary School STEM Academy today received the Georgia Department of Education’s Garden of the Season recognition as part of the Georgia Farm to School Award. Clark Creek is one of only four schools in Georgia to receive the recognition, a testament to the unparalleled talent and dedication of CCSD teachers and staff!
DOE officials visited the school's edible garden in person on May 9 and provided the school with the Garden of the Season signage. Principal Joey Moss noted that the school garden serves many purposes and engages students in the process of growing food like sweet potatoes and greens that can be served in the cafeteria. Moss noted that many of their families do not have gardens at home and the connection for students is invaluable.
Teacher Karen Garland and her fifth grade classes lead the planting and care of the school garden, along with the student garden club, the Cloverbuds. The school celebrated the recognition with a brief program in the garden today, joined by the school's cafeteria staff, district School Nutrition and School Leadership Operations representatives, and Superintendent Mary Elizabeth Davis, who praised the School Nutrition team and the students and teachers for their hard work. Georgia DOE was represented by State School Nutrition Director Dr. Linette Dobson and Academic Nutritionist Kelly Toon.
