Meet a 2024-25 Student Delegate: Zahira Ambriz-Villela of Sequoyah High School!
Student voice matters in CCSD! Each year, every high school selects a Student Delegate to the School Board to represent their peers and provide valuable insight to the district’s governance team. In addition to the Delegates participating in School Board meetings, Superintendent of Schools Mary Elizabeth Davis meets with the group throughout the year to listen for insights to develop plans for district and school improvement. Why did you want to serve as a student delegate to the School Board?
I wanted to serve as a student delegate to bring my perspective, and that of others at my school, into implementing policies ranging from increasing accessibility to academic resources and fostering safe student environments. I believe more direct participation from students in these decisions leads to innovative solutions to address the changing educational landscape in a manner that is tailored to the benefit of students.
What have you learned from the experience so far?
I have learned about the board's commitment to working with the community. District officials make the decisions concerning improving learning and school security; nonetheless, they consistently communicate with parents, teachers, and students to know any potential shortcomings that need to be improved. Additionally, I have become aware of the district budget for our schools, in which every portion maximizes the resources available for the wellness of students and teachers as a positive force for the community who contributes to the budget.
What do you feel makes a good leader?
A good leader is an individual who can recognize the strengths and weaknesses of group members to incorporate everyone into achieving a common goal. They do not tell others what to do but rather set an example through their service and empathy toward others.
What do you like most about your school?
What I like the most about Sequoyah is the faculty who are passionate about the subjects they teach and show interest in the lives of students outside of academic success. They truly dedicate themselves to preparing students for the future and creating a positive environment for each person.
