What’s the most innovative idea that you’ve tried in your classroom?
In my classroom, students complete numerous math-themed STEM activities and thinking tasks, including vertical tasks inspired by Peter Liljedahl, the author of “Building Thinking Classrooms.”  Some other tasks include counting 10,000 beans to better understand the powers of 10 or designing a business menu and creating a 3D taco truck.
Who is the best teacher you ever had and what made him or her special?
I had many fantastic teachers here in Cherokee County, however the one who stands out the most is Mary Elizabeth Smith, my first-grade teacher at Ball Ground Elementary.  Not only did I learn how to read in her classroom, but she also ensured learning was fun!  One memory that stands out the most is market day where we were able to sell and purchase items using 100 pennies.  One hundred pennies seemed like a fortune to me as a first-grader!
What can parents do to prepare their children for learning?
Parents play a crucial role in ensuring their child’s academic success.  Parents can partner with teachers to build a strong relationship between school and home by volunteering in the classroom and taking an active role in their child’s education.  Parents should encourage a love for learning!  Encourage your child to ask questions and seek answers through exploration and creative thinking.
What are the obstacles to getting all kids to achieve?
I would say one of the biggest obstacles is mindset.  One of the mantras I use to encourage my students is, “I can do hard things!”  I even have to remind myself that even when the obstacles seem impossible or the “mountain” appears too difficult to climb, you can reach your goals!  My hope is that my students know that they are loved and can do anything they set their minds to do.
